(KMOV) – A Metro East family recently realized they had been paying for a sanitary service that was never actually connected for over the past 20 years.
Crews dug to fix a sewage backup and discovered that Mary Washington’s home was not connected to the city sanitary system. It was instead connected to a cesspool.
Washington began renting the house in 1988 and later bought it in a courthouse auction. District leaders also recently discovered that the house was not connected to a sewer line.
Washington’s son, Sylvester, estimates she has paid more than $3,600 in bills.
Sanitary Board President Andy Economy told News 4 on Tuesday that if it is determined the house was not connected then the family will get their money back. Two days later, Economy and the board attorney said the family will not receive their money back.
News 4 called city officials to see why it never made the sewer connection was made, but no calls were returned.
