EAST ST. LOUIS, Il. (KMOV) – The East St. Louis CeaseFire held a gathering in the Orr Weathers Housing Complex in an effort to stop violence on Tuesday afternoon.
The gathering was called a “Rapid Response” to the shooting involving East St. Louis police officer Michael Baxton, Jr.
"Violence is a serious public health issue that threatens everyone, but unfortunately we lack an institutional response like there is for domestic abuse or child welfare," Nichol Stevenson, coordinator of CeaseFire, said. "It is not okay to shoot anyone, especially a police officer who is sworn to serve and protect you."
CeaseFire is a program set to prevent community violence through public education and awareness campaigns, and opportunities for the youth.
