FAIRMOUNT CITY, Il. (KMOV) – A Metro East landfill is quickly filling up and will eventually close next year, according to officials.
The Milam Landfill, located next to the Gateway International Raceway, has taken in trash from St. Louis and surrounding cities since Lyndon B. Johnson was president, but will stop taking the trash by the end of 2013.
Waste Management plans to open a slightly smaller landfill north of the Milam Landfill when it closes and officials admit that there might be an increase in trash collecting costs.
The best way to keep the costs down and extend the life of a landfill is by recycling. Waste Management officials tell News 4 that an increase in recycling will keep the St. Louis area from a shortage of space for decades.
