(KMOV) -- The Wellston City Council held an emergency meeting Monday night to discuss the firing of Police Chief G. Thomas Walker. Walker tells News 4  that Mayor Linda Whitfield fired him on Tuesday. But that, according to council members, was illegal.

Council woman Yvonne Hawkins confirmed on camera that Chief Walker is back as top cop. She, nor other council members, would elaborate about why Chief Walker was fired or what Mayor Whitfield said during the meeting.

The chief's reinstatement is something we have not been able to confirm directly with Mayor Whitfield. While every other council member entered city hall through the front door, Mayor Whitfield ducked into the meeting through a back entrance. She won't return my phone calls nor will she come to her door when I've knocked at her home. Even as late as 10 p.m. -- four hours after the meeting began -- I'm told Mayor Whitfield is hiding inside city hall, even though her house is just across the street.

People I talked to say her actions don't surprise them.

“ I think that if someone’s mad at you today, tomorrow you’re gone” said Rick Griffin, the Police Officer’s Union Representative.

“I feel like a lot of things are in jeopardy. As far as not only safety but accountability” said Sharon Owens-Hare, a resident of Wellston.

The city has still not explained why Chief Walker was dismissed. Some officials said they knew nothing about it. Stay with News 4 and kmov.com on the very latest.
