ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Area hospitals and police departments are joining forces in a project to protect kids from guns.
The CDC reports more than two million children live in homes that have loaded, unlocked guns.
22 percent of them admit handling those guns, despite warnings from parents.
“Children are very good at finding things. They can find holiday presents and they can find improperly stored fire arms,” said Bill Brassard of Project ChildSafe. “So hiding a gun is not safe storage.”
Thursday the O’Fallon, Missouri and Alton police departments will hand out free gun locks to combat the problem.
