RALEIGH, N.C. – Lottery tickets are hot commodities this week as the Powerball jackpot has reached $320 million, the fourth largest in the game’s history.
The next Powerball drawing will take place Wednesday, and the winner will get $213 million if they choose the lump sum. No one came through during Saturday's estimated $253 million Powerball drawing.
But Gary Crispens of Durham won a $1 million Powerball prize during last Saturday’s drawing, a lottery win he predicted years earlier would happen.
“I’ve always been very lucky and I just knew it would happen eventually,” Crispens said in a statement. “In fact, I have won money three weeks in a row playing Powerball. I was just telling my wife that it was leading up to something big.”
The accountant matched five white balls but did not hit the jackpot without the red Powerball. He bought the ticket at a Kroger in Durham and will received $680,000 after taxes.
“I handed my tickets to the clerk and jokingly said ‘I’m here to pick up my big money.’ She told me there had been a $1 million ticket sold there. When she scanned my ticket, she said I had won something big,” Crispens said. “Then she printed out the numbers and said I had won the big one. I immediately called my wife and said ‘Honey, we’re millionaires.’ We took off work and came right over to the lottery headquarters. This is just unbelievable.”
