MADISON COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV) – A man is in custody after he allegedly attempted to rob a gas station in Godrey, Illinois.

Terry Elsperman, 44, was charged with felony attempted armed robbery.

According to police, Elsperman walked into the Moto Mart Gas Station in the 5300 block of Godfrey Road and went to the snack section.

Police said Elsperman then abruptly made his way behind the front counter while holding a knife and threatened to hurt the on-duty clerk.

Authorities said the clerk jumped over the counter and ran outside where a customer was buying gasoline. The customer then called 911 and provided police with a description of Elsperman, who fled the store on foot.

An investigation led police to the 5600 block of Godfrey Road, where they located Elsperman. He was arrested without incident.

Police executed a search warrant and recovered evidence linking Elsperman to the crime.

Elsperman, who was convicted in 2003 for aggravated, was taken into custody, where he remains on the $100,000 bond.
