Man charged with neglecting elderly mother sentenced

ST. CHARLES, Ill. (AP) -- One of three siblings accused of neglecting their elderly mother to the point her leg had to be amputated because of gangrene has been sentenced to three years in prison.

In sentencing Kevin Roberson on Thursday, Kane County Circuit Judge Clint Hull said the 43-year-old Roberson was “capable of caring for his mother. He just chose not to.”

Roberson, his brother, Alan, and sister, Connie, were charged with neglecting their mother, Martha Roberson, from June 2011 through Oct. 2. They all pleaded guilty to the charges.

When Roberson, 77, was removed from the Aurora house for which her pension and Social Security checks paid the rent, she had lice in her hair, a gangrenous foot that required amputation and several bedsores.

Kevin Roberson’s siblings are scheduled for sentencing Monday.
