GRANITE CITY, Il (KMOV.com) – Emergency crews responded Tuesday evening to a collision involving a tractor trailer and a Madison County Transit bus on Route 3 in Granite City.
The wreck occurred near West Chain of Rocks Road just south of 270.
Madison County Transit reports the bus was stopped at a light going northbound on Route 3 at the intersection with Chain of Rocks Rd.
The semi reportedly rear-ended the bus, sending it into a pickup truck in front of it. The bus ended up skidding over 75 yards into a ditch.
The tractor trailer then veered to the right striking the overhead traffic lights and ended up with the cab of the truck on its right side in a ditch, while the trailer remained upright.
Emergency crews from multiple agencies assisted the Granite City Police and Fire Department, including Madison County Sheriff, Illinois State Police, Alton ambulance, Edwardsville ambulance, Collinsville ambulance and Abbott ambulance along with ARCH rescue helicopters.
The driver of the semi was airlifted to an area hospital after he was extricated from the cab. He was taken to St. Louis University Hospital.
Five passengers and the driver of the bus were also transported on the ground. All six were taken to Gateway Regional and are in stable condition.
The driver of the pickup was taken to Alton Memoria and is also in stable condition.
The status of the semi driver is not yet known.
Authorities say the roadway will be shut down for another couple of hours.
