ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Police arrested a local teenager after he allegedly pointed a laser at Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny and a San Francisco Giants pitcher at Busch Stadium Monday night.
Officials said in the bottom of the seventh inning, Matheny saw a green flash on the mound where Giant’s pitcher Shane Loux was about to pitch to Matt Holliday.
Police said Matheny saw the suspect laughing from a suite along the first baseline and made eye contact with him. Matheny then pointed to the culprit and mouthed the words, “I see you.”
That’s when the teen laughed, waved and pointed the laser above the manager’s head. An officer inside the dugout also saw the laser, police said.
Police said security gathered at the suite and saw three teenagers try to leave. One of them reached into his sock and threw something in the trash can, police said.
Officers stopped the teens before they could leave and recovered a laser pointer from the trash can.
Police said other officers responded to the suite and found other teens there with an adult who allegedly did not cooperate with police.
Matheny was later called to the security office where the teens were held and pointed out the suspect, who was identified as a friend of the suite owner’s son.
The teen was taken into custody and stayed the night in jail on suspicion of peace disturbance at an athletic event.
Police said they planned to seek charges Tuesday afternoon.
