WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Justice is awarding 13 Illinois cities more than $4 million in grants to support their law enforcement agencies.
An announcement by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin's office says the grants are part of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program. Byrne was a young police officer killed while on the job in New York in the 1980s.
In Illinois the grants will range from $3.1 million for Chicago to buy police cruisers and other equipment to just over $10,000 for Marion to buy in-car video systems.
Other cities receiving grant money are Aurora, Bloomington, Champaign, Danville, Decatur, East St. Louis, Naperville, Peoria, Rockford, Springfield and Waukegan.
