LITCHFIELD, Ill. (KMOV) -- Illinois State police say it will take several days before they know for sure what caused the Megabus crash that left one dead and dozens of others injured in Litchfield on Thursday.

A team of investigators will look at the bus mechanically and also conduct accident reconstruction models.

Several passengers say they heard one of the tires blow on the bus before it went into a cement column at an overpass on I-55.

One person was killed and police say 47 people were taken to hospitals with injuries.

Megabus spokesperson Amanda Byers released a statement on the wreck late Thursday night.

“The thoughts and prayers of our entire staff go out to everyone involved, particularly the family of the person who has died,” said Byers.

She said safe remains the company’s number one priority.

“We can confirm that the vehicle involved in the accident was manufactured in 2011 and had passed a full preventative maintenance check within the past week,” said Byers.

Police say there were 78 passengers on the bus and two drivers.
