ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- I know this is really being nitpicky. The Cardinals scored nine runs Wednesday night and 11 runs the night before, so it’s pretty crazy to be complaining about anything involving the offense.
Nonetheless, is anybody else baffled by seeing Daniel Descalso hitting lead-off for the Cardinals while he subs for the injured Rafael Furcal? Descalso is an excellent defensive infielder. He can play second base, shortstop and third base. He’s a very valuable guy to have on the club. But leadoff?
Descalso is one of the weakest hitters on the team. He’s hitting .239. On Tuesday night he batted first while Jon Jay (.287) hit seventh and Skip Schumaker (.323) hit eighth. Does that make sense? Don’t you want your better hitters at the top of the line-up hitting in front of Matt Holliday, Carlos Beltran and David Freese?
I guess this is why they pay managers like Mike Matheny the big bucks. Somehow, he must have known batting Descalso first would lead to big run production.... even if Descalso didn’t have much to do with the runs being scored.
Again, I know it’s crazy to be complaining about a lineup that just scored 20 runs in the last two games. But that’s what we do in St. Louis; we freak out about line-ups. What else do we have to worry about?
