(KMOV) – The St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendon Kelly is now tackling truancy in the East St. Louis School District.
Close to 50 percent of kids in East St. Louis are chronically cutting class.
Truancy Rates are also soaring above the state’s average, in other St. Clair County school district.
Now some students are encouraging their classmates to stay in school.
“So people can see that kids don’t want to be failures, show people what their talents are in life and show them that God didn’t send them here for no reason,” Eight-grader Vergal Williams said.
For the first time ever in the county, parents are now facing charges if they allow their kid to miss too much school.
