Investigations underway after worker injured at Sauget factory

( – A Metro East Worker is in the hospital and a company is investigating after a workplace accident in Sauget Wednesday.

Early in the day, workers at Stellar Manufacturing were lifting a bag of processed powdered chemicals. The bag, which weighed 3,675 pounds, was hoisted by several straps designed to bear the load.

During the operation, one of the straps failed, causing the bag to drop. A worker’s arm and head were wedged underneath the bag while others worked to free him.

The employee was taken to Barnes Jewish Hospital with broken ribs and scrapes, but remarkably did not suffer any serious injuries.

Investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were at the facility Wednesday morning to determine the cause of the accident.

Stellar is also talking to the manufacturer of the straps about why it failed, and is looking into whether they should redesign the work area to prevent accidents in the future.

Coming up on News 4 at 5, we are looking into whether the facility has a history with accidents, and how the accident could have been prevented.
