(KMOV.com) -- In 50 years of broadcasting, I've covered numerous stories ... way too many ... about children dying.
The story might have been a child killed while riding a tricycle, drowning in a lake --- the tragic accidents that every parent fears.
Of course, there are the stories where children are victims of a crime ... such as the story we are covering in Percy, Illinois.
Four children, 12 year old Ethan Owen, 9 year old Kailey Owen and 5 year old twins Brandon and Landon Owen, are killed in a house fire which turns out to be arson. A suspect is in custody; our legal system is at work and will hopefully lead to justice.
But nothing will bring those children back.
They are lost forever. Children who were just starting their life journey --- now cut short.
Parents, relatives and friends are filled with an aching grief that will never go away.
They need prayer and support ... just to get from this day to the next.
From the time my first daughter was born, I knew this young, precious life was so fragile and needed so much protection from the world.
That's when I began to truly understand what I had seen over the years on the faces of grieving parents.
From that time forward, I have always felt a link to any parent who lost a child.
I'm sure many of you who are parents feel the same connection.
You hurt for the loss of the children; you ache for their parents.
You hug your own children so tightly.
