EMS worker charged as criminal investigation launched in deadly Texas explosion

WEST, Texas—A West EMS technician, Bryce Reed, was arrested early Friday and charged with possession of a destructive device. He is being held in the McClennan County Jail. He is expected to appear in federal court in Waco this morning to answer charges.

While there is no confirmation that his arrest is related to the plant explosion in West, Texas on April 17, The Texas Department of Public Safety said in a Friday statement that the agency has instructed the Texas Rangers and the McLennan County Sheriff's Department to launch a criminal probe.

The plant explosion left 14 people dead and injured 200 others.

Investigators said the blast occurred at 7:51 p.m. on April 17 -- 18 minutes after first responders, including volunteer firefighters from West, were alerted to a fire at West Fertilizer. Most of the first responders who died in the explosion were found east of the main crater.

DPS Director Steven McCraw said in a statement he wants to ensure "no stone goes unturned" in the investigation.
