Questionable call gives Molina 8-game hit streak

(BaseballStL) -- A close call at first base against the Chicago Cubs extended Yadier Molina’s hit streak to eight games on Tuesday.

Molina hit a slow grounder to third baseman Luis Valbuena, who bounced the throw to first baseman Anthony Rizzo. It appeared the stretching Rizzo did not bobble the ball while his foot was still on the bag as umpire Andy Fletcher called Molina safe on the bang-bang play.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum came out to argue the call, but did not succeed with his argument.

In the next Cardinals at-bat, Molina would be forced out at second base on a hit by David Freese for the second out. The Cardinals would eventually strand the bases loaded after Lance Lynn struck out to end the inning.

Molina currently holds the longest hit streak on the Cardinals roster. He is 14-for-31 during the streak.
