(BaseballStL) -- The St. Louis Cardinals will have a little more pop coming from the bench, if needed, against the Chicago Cubs. The team activated Matt Adams from the 15-day disabled list ahead of Tuesday night’s series opener against the Cubs.

Adams has been out since April 22 with a right oblique strain after a torrid start to the season. The rookie bruiser smacked three home runs and drove in eight runs while batting .542 in 24 at-bats before the injury.

Adams returns to the 25-man roster after a three-game rehab stint at Double-A Springfield. He went 3-for-12 with a double and drove in two runs.

To make room for the 6-foot-3, 260-pound first baseman, the team optioned utility infielder Jermaine Curtis shortly after Sunday’s 10-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Curtis joined Triple-A Memphis in time to start at third base on Monday in Omaha.
