Next SLU president may not be a Jesuit

ST. LOUIS -- Saint Louis University is looking for a new president for the first time in a quarter of a century, but it doesn’t necessarily need to be a Jesuit.

The Rev. Lawrence Biondi announced Saturday that he plans to retire. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that trustees will consider whether to replace Biondi with another Jesuit priest.

University bylaws make it clear that the next president doesn’t necessarily need to be part of the order that founded the school. A recent amendment to the bylaws eliminated a sentence that read, “The President shall be a member of the Society of Jesus.”

The pool of Jesuits with the right resume is quickly shrinking. There were 7,000 American Jesuit priests in the 1960s, only about 2,500 now.
