ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- The city of St. Louis tore down the Hopeville Homeless encampments Friday afternoon.

But the move has come with some controversy.  At least 30 residents had remained in those encampments despite the city’s repeated efforts to move the homeless out of the area.

Residents of Hopeville say that it was a safe place for the homeless and there were bylaws that kept it safe.

But city officials say the situation was unsafe and unsanitary. They said they are doing everything they can to help those who lived in Hopeville relocate to a safe area.
