Fire marshal: Covered fire hydrant could pose 'serious problem'

BRIDGETON, Mo. (KMOV) -- A customer at a busy St. Louis County shopping center notifies News 4 about a safety hazard that could allow a potential fire to burn longer.

A fire hydrant is buried up to and a little over where the firefighters attach their hose.  According to officials, firefighters need at least a 14-inch clearance to use a wrech to open the hydrant.

A Pattonville Fire Protection District fire marshal notified the property owners to immediately fix the 'serious problem.'  The problem would not stop firefighters but it would likely help the fire to burn longer.

"They would find themselves in a position where it would take an extended period of time to get that hydrant into operation," Fire Marshal Paul Richard, said.  "Speed is critical."

Officials found a second fire hydrant that was obstructed and posed a potential hazard.  The property owners have three days to fix the problems or they will be cited.
