Belleville man pleads guilty in toddler assault

BELLEVILLE, Illinois -- A southwestern Illinois man faces up to 30 years in prison now that he's admitted beating his then-girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter so severely that doctors worried she would need a feeding tube the rest of her life.

Twenty-six-year-old Kraig Monroe Jr. of Belleville pleaded guilty Monday in St. Clair County to a felony count of aggravated battery.

Authorities say Monroe was babysitting Amanda Runyon in February 2010 in his Belleville-area trailer home when he repeatedly punched her in the stomach to stop her from crying.

The girl sustained tears to her liver, and surgeons later had to remove a quarter of the child's intestines.

Monroe's sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 28.
