LAKE ST. CLAIR, Missouri (KMOV.com) -- The prime suspect in the fatal shooting death of a woman in a Lake St. Clair home was captured Friday, nearly 12 hours after his son reported seeing him.
Michael C. Murphy was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. He remains at the Franklin County Jail on a $2 million bond.
Franklin County Sheriff Toelke said the man was captured by officers Friday morning and is now being checked out at a hospital. Officials did not say exactly where Murphy was found.
According to reports, Michael Murphy’s son called police Thursday night around 11 p.m. after his dad showed up at his home asking for help. The son refused to help his dad and told him to turn himself in. Murphy then fled the home.
On Friday morning, deputies said about 100 officers responded to the Lake St. Clair area to continue the search for Murphy. According to authorities, one of the search teams found Murphy hiding behind a log near the 1500 block of Deer Run around 10:30 a.m.
Deputies said a K-9 with the search team grabbed Murphy by the leg and drug him from behind the log. Murphy, who did not have a weapon in his possession, was taken into custody without incident.
He later told police he had hidden a weapon in a wooden area several miles from where he was found. Police said Murphy also told them he had traveled several miles the day before.
Authorities have been looking for Murphy since Wednesday. He is suspected to have shot and killed his girlfriend, 40-year-old Stephanie Tauchert, in a Lake St. Clair home.
