UNIVERSITY CITY, Missouri (KMOV) -- A suspect was hospitalized but expected to survive after being shot by St. Louis police on Thursday.

Police said officers started pursuing Darius Robinson near Skinner and Page when they saw him pointing a gun at them. They tried to pull him over, but police say he led them on a chase that ended up in University City off Roberts Avenue.

Authorities say Robinson pointed a rifle at officers. That’s when one of the officers shot the man in the ankle. Police say his gun appeared to be an assault rifle.

A woman who lives in the area said she heard six to eight shots, though that  was not confirmed by authorities.

The suspect’s condition was not immediately available.

The St. Louis police officer who fired his weapon will be put on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
