BERKELEY, Mo. (KMOV) -- A St. Louis County neighborhood is on edge after a 61 year old woman was found dead in her home Wednesday. When she didn't show up for work at 8 am her sister came to check on her and found her body. Berkeley police are treating it as a homicide. The woman's identity hasn't been released, but she lived alone in the 9000 block of Harold.
"I just spoke to her Saturday and asked how she's doing," said Fred Helmering. He lives across the street and said everything seemed fine. He didn't hear anything suspicious overnight. Helmering knows her son and spoke with him Wednesday afternoon. "(The son is) doing pretty good. He said, 'Heaven help (the killer) if I ever catch him.'"
A couple of young women who also live across the street remember helping the victim with chores around the house years ago. They described her as a sweet lady who always bought girl scout cookies from them.
Berkeley Police have 6 detectives working the case. The cause of death has not been determined.
