ST. LOUIS-- A cardiologist at St. Louis Children’s Hospital says the 5-year-old boy allegedly abducted from the hospital had a heart condition that came on suddenly.
Porter Stone was found safe early Wednesday with his father and paternal grandmother at a motel near Chicago. The two adults face numerous charges.
Dr. Charlie Canter says Porter had just enough medicine for 24 to 48 hours. Once that ran out he would have become ill, though Canter says it is unlikely his life would have been in immediate jeopardy.
Porter was healthy before being diagnosed earlier this year with dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and weakened. He was placed on a transplant list.
Canter says it typically takes several months for a donor heart to become available.
