Police urge residents to keep information private to protect from identity theft

CREVE COEUR, Mo. (KMOV) – Two puzzling cases of identity theft have hit Creve Coeur and News 4 has learned some quick ways to protect yourself from it happening to you.

Police are not sure how thieves got access to the victim’s credit card numbers, but say it is often easier to do than you might think.  One victim was used numerous times during the past week on the same website.

Police urge the public to keep your information, such as your birth date and the high school you went to, private on Facebook and to check your credit reports.

It is also important to report identity theft to the police to help them track crime rings.  A police report will extend your credit fraud alert for seven years instead of just 90 days.
