(KMOV) – Damage caused by vandals who defaced a southern Illinois school will keep students at Franklin Middle School out of classes until Thursday.

The Salem, Illinois Police Chief says the vandalism happened sometime Monday night or early Tuesday morning at Franklin Middle School on Hawthorne Road.

Vandals targeted the seventh and eighth grade portion of the school with either a crow bar or a hammer, concentrating on glass, computers, smart boards, copiers and printers. They destroyed classrooms, the prinicipal's office and other areas of the school. The damage estimates pass six figures. Sources say insurance will cover the costs of repairs.

A new computer lab in the school that’s only a few weeks old was totally destroyed, causing approximately $80,000 in damage.

The chief called it a vicious attack on the middle school.

Officials say there are juvenile suspects in the case, and that the suspects got into the school through an unlocked window and cut the screen. However, police have no suspects in custody.
