(KMOV) – An eight-year-old boy is in the hospital after being shot in the back.

The shooting happened around 6:40 p.m. on Monday in the 2900 block of Spring in north St. Louis.

The boy was hit after someone fired at the car he was riding in. Police say bullets pierced the front window and the back of the car. The boy was hit in the back. His father was grazed in the head but refused treatment at the scene.

Authorities believe the gunman may have been targeting the boy's father who was driving the car.

Police say the boy’s father drove him to the St. Louis City Juvenile Detention Center in the 3800 block of Enright in Midtown for help. Sources say this was the only place the boy’s father thought of coming after the boy was shot about a mile away.

The child is expected to be survive. He is being treated at St. Louis Children’s Hospital where doctors removed a bullet fragment from his back. He is listed in stable condition.

No word on any suspects in this case.
