(KMOV) -- A suspect is in custody accused of shooting a St. Louis police officer.
The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday in the 4600 block of Margaretta in north St. Louis.
Police say that an officer had just finished a call in that area when he saw a man acting suspiciously, standing near Cora and Margaretta.
The officer shined his spotlight on the man and police say the man turned suddenly and opened fire on the officer.
The police cruiser was struck multiple times on the driver's side. One of the bullets went through the driver's door and struck the officer in the buttock.
The officer was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
The suspect ran from the scene toward a multi-family housing complex in the 4000 block of Cora.
Police and a SWAT team surrounded the building and were able to get inside around 3:00 a.m. That's when they found a man and a weapon, both matching the description of the suspect and gun used in the shooting.
The suspect was taken into custody.
The 27-year-old officer’s name has not yet been released.
No word yet on any charges the suspect in this case is facing.
