(KMOV) – A local car dealer is dead and three suspects are in custody after an attempted robbery and shooting in north St. Louis.

Richard Lee Clouser, 71, who was a popular car dealer known as Jolly Rich, was shot to death when three armed men entered his business.

The shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Jolly Rich's Used Car Dealership in the 4600 block of Natural Bridge.

Neighbors called police when they saw the three armed men enter the dealership.

Officers raced to the scene and when they arrived, Clouser's son opened the door and ran from the business. Police rushed inside just in time to corner and arrest the three suspects.

Officers found Clouser shot to death in the main office area. Authorities say the gunmen had tied up Clouser and shot him to death.

Police say Clouser's son witnessed the killing. He was not injured.

Jolly Rich was a popular business owner that operated his used car lot at the site for more than forty years.

Police say robbery was the motive in the attack.

No word yet on any charges against the suspects in this case.
