If you don't have diabetes now, there's a good chance you will someday. That's the conclusion of a new report by health insurer United Health Group. It predicts more than half of Americans will have diabetes by 2020 or be in the process of developing diabetes. The report also predicts the disease will account for 10% of total health care spending, an estimated $500 billion a year.
Diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases in the Unites States, affecting about 26 million Americans. More than 67 million are estimated to have prediabetes and most of them don't know it because there may not be any obvious symptoms. People with prediabetes have higher than normal blood sugar levels but not high enough to be diagnosed with diabetes.
The most important steps to preventing diabetes includes exercise, losing weight, don't smoke and reduce your alcohol consumption.
