(KMOV) -- Several families had to make an abrupt move overnight after an apartment fire.

It happened around 11:00 p.m. on Monday at the Lafayette Square Apartments in Wood River, Illinois.

The damage is worse than it looks from the outside. One unit had fire damage and another unit had heavy smoke damage.

The people who lived in the four-unit building all had to leave their homes.

No one was hurt in this fire and the flames did not spread to any other buildings in the apartment complex.

It's unclear what caused the fire but investigators do not believe it was intentionally set.
