(KMOV)-- Two people were killed after an accident in the Metro East.

This happened around 4:53 a.m. Tuesday on I-64 westbound at mile post 36 (near the Washington/Clinton County line).

According to Illinois State Trooper Mike Link, a eastbound Chevrolet car went through the median and was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes. That car crashed head first into a westbound tractor-trailer.

The driver of the Chevrolet was transported to an area hospital and was later pronounced dead. The driver of the tractor-trailer was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger in the tractor-trailer was transported to St. Johns Mercy in unknown condition.

No names have been released yet.

Westbound I-64 is shutdown from Exit 34 to 41. That is a 7 mile stretch in Oakaville to Damianville.
