(KMOV)-- A man escaped his burning Metro East home Tuesday morning thanks to a quick-thinking passerby.
Steven Wake and a friend saw a house on fire around 5:30 a.m. on Galy Avenue in East St. Louis.
According to the witnesses, a light was on inside the house which indicated to them that someone was home, so they called 911.
After banging on the door several times, Steven, who was a former Belleville, Illinois firefighter, kicked the door in. He found a man sleeping in bed with the room completely filled with smoke upstairs. He was able to help the man out of the house.
While waiting on the fire department to arrive, Steven secured the scene by moving a gas can away from the house.
