(KMOV) – Church members known for spreading messages of hate plan to protest a local Marine’s funeral.
The Westboro Baptist Church located in Topeka, Kansas is known for demonstrating at soldiers’ funerals.
Church members say they believe God is punishing the United States for what members call the “sin of homosexuality.”
Last Friday, Staff Sergeant Jordan Emrick died when a roadside bomb detonated in Afghanistan.
Emrick’s funeral will be on Saturday in his hometown of Hoyleton, Illinois.
Members of the Patriot Guard say they will be on site at the funeral to block protestors, and were at the visitation on Friday.
However, community members are coming together to make sure Emrick’s loved ones won’t see or hear those protestors if they do show up.
The Westboro Baptist Church originated in Topeka, Kansas in 2005.
