English soccer powers to play at Busch Stadium

ST. LOUIS—Two of the top teams in soccer’s English Premier League are coming to St. Louis for an exhibition match.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Friday that Busch Stadium will host a game on May 23 between Manchester City and Chelsea. The match will start at 7:30 p.m.

St. Louis has a long soccer heritage, but has been hurt in recent years because of the lack of an appropriate venue for big-time matches.

“We are honored to host this historic match,” said Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III. “This is a wonderful opportunity for St. Louisans to see some of the best soccer players in the world. We also look forward to showcasing the versatility of Busch Stadium as a multi-use sports venue.”

Vicki Bryant, vice president of event services and merchandising for the Cardinals, says the hope is to make a high-profile game an annual event.

Tickets go on sale Tuesday at 10 a.m. and can be found on the Cardinals website.

Reserved seats start at $30, while premium reserved seats are going for $100. All-inclusive seats will cost $140.

Manchester City, 2012 Premier League champions and winner of five Cup titles, returns to North America for the first time since their 2011 summer pre-season tour.

Chelsea FC, which became the first London team to win the Champions League last season, has four Premier League and seven FA Cup titles in its storied history.

The match marks the first professional, non-baseball sporting event hosted at the new Busch Stadium.
