JUPITER, Fla - When David Freese went on the disabled list with inflammation in his lower back it changed not only the Cardinals starting lineup but also the look of the bench.
Freese’s absence will move Matt Carpenter to third base while Daniel Descalso will handle a lot of the duties at second. Ryan Jackson was then recalled to provide versatility off the bench. He’s going to play second base. He’s going to play third base. He’s going to play shortstop.
Today against the Nationals, Descalso’s actually playing third base with Jackson at second. Manager Mike Matheny says there’s good reason for that.
“(Jackson) needs to be versatile. He needs to be all over the place,” Matheny said. “And (Descalso’s) going to be exposed to third base so it’s good for both of them.”
