SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The former manager of the Missouri State University Bookstore has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $1 million from the university.

Mark Brixey pleaded guilty Tuesday to theft, money laundering and filing a false income tax return. He admitted he embezzled more than $1.1 million over eight years.

KYTV reports university officials discovered the theft last summer when they found $81,000 in cash in Brixey’s desk while he was on vacation. Investigators say Brixey converted checks from textbook companies to cash, rather than using the money to buy back textbooks from students.

Investigators also say Bixey converted money deposited in his credit union account to a certificate of deposit, and didn’t report more than $194,000 in stolen cash on his 2010 return.

A sentencing date has not been set.
