PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla (BaseballSTL) -- If the Cardinals were to play a regular season game and be without catcher Yadier Molina and outfielder Carlos Beltran, the lineup employed today just might be the one you would see Mike Matheny use.
Neither Molina nor Beltran will make the trip to Port St. Lucie this afternoon as the Cards give both of them a few days off following the World Baseball Classic. Puerto Rico went to the championship game, losing to the Dominican Republic, and kept the Cards regulars out of camp for more than a couple weeks.
Matt Carpenter starts at second base with Matt Adams at first and Allen Craig in the outfield, a look Cardinals fans could see in the regular season when Beltran gets days off.
Adam Wainwright makes the start against the Mets.
1) Jon Jay - CF 2) Matt Carpenter - 2B 3) Matt Holliday - LF 4) Allen Craig - RF 5) Matt Adams - 1B 6) David Freese - 3B 7) Pete Kozma - SS 8) Tony Cruz - C 9) Adam Wainwright - P
Every position player (minus Beltran and Molina) is on the trip as well as every pitcher (minus the starters who aren't throwing today). It's going to be soon that Mike Matheny begins using his relievers on back to back days to get them ready for the season.
First pitch from Port St. Lucie is 12:05 p.m. St. Louis time.
