Carpenter back in camp, doubts he'll pitch again

JUPITER, Fla. - Chris Carpenter showed up at Cardinals camp Monday and said he’s still dealing with the side effects of a nerve issue in his neck and arm that’s bothered him since 2008.

The right-hander said he stills feels tingling and numbing sensations during normal everyday activities, speaking like a man who knows he likely will never pitch again.

“I’m not going to have surgery any more,” Carpenter said. “We’ll see what happens. I don’t see it. With the things that are going on in times of every day life, I just don’t see it getting better to be honest with you.”

Carpenter was asked if he wanted to continue pitching.

“I do,” Carpenter said. “I just don’t think I can.”

The former Cy Young award winner informed the Cardinals in early February that he would be unable to keep throwing. And it appears he may never pitch again.
