(KMOV) – A day after getting a No. 4 seed in the Midwest Regional of the NCAA Tournament, the St. Louis University Men’s basketball team left for San Jose, where they will take on New Mexico St. on Thursday.

The school’s first conference title team since 1957 and first conference tournament championship title since 2000 has the small Jesuit school in Midtown excited for the bump in positive public relations.

A school similar to SLU, Butler University, did a study after their Final Four appearance and figured it got $600 million worth of nationwide print, television and online publicity. Student applications rose 41 percent.

While the Billikens have a long way to go before they get to a Final Four, but they’ve been one of the feel-good stories in college basketball this year as they dealt with the loss of head coach Rick Majerus.

This season’s success is the kind of thing that helps everybody on campus walk with a little bit of a bounce in their step.

“This is the kind of postivie publicity that any university craves,” said Jeff Fowler, vice president of advancement at SLU. "Not only are they winning, but they're winning the right way. Coach is great, kids are great, team is great, great story."

"If SLU were to somehow get to the Final Four and win a national championship, the parades would be phenomenal."

SLU tips off against New Mexico St. at 1:10 p.m. Thursday.
