CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois residents are being warned about possible spring flooding and the impact on insurance policies.

The Illinois Department of Insurance says heavy rains could lead to a wet spring in flood-prone areas of the state. Department director Michael McRaith says consumers should check their insurance policy benefits. He says flood insurance isn't part of standard homeowner or renter policies.

The department offers some tips: Keep in mind flood insurance takes 30 days to go into effect. Average flood insurance policies cost about $400 a year for $100,000 in coverage. And standard flood coverage doesn't usually include sewer or sump pump problems.
