NIU's Wicks to be Huskies interim head coach

DeKALB, Ill. (AP) -- Northern Illinois University has named assistant basketball coach Sundance Wicks as interim head coach.

The move came Thursday, the day after the school announced Ricardo Patton wouldn't be back for a fifth season as head coach of the Huskies.

Northern Illinois finished the year 9-21 following Tuesday night's 74-54 loss to Bowling Green in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament.

Under Patton, the Huskies went 35-83 in four years and 19-44 in the MAC.

Wicks was NIU assistant coach for the last four seasons. He previously was an assistant at Colorado and Northern State University in North Dakota.

NIU athletics director Jeff Compher said Wicks isn't a candidate to be permanent head coach.
