WARRENTON, Mo. – Kaitlin Hampton showed up at the Warrenton National Guard Armory on March 5th expecting to see her boyfriend, Specialist Zack Pollard, get a military award. What Hampton did not know is that the award ceremony was a ruse to get her to the armory for something much bigger, something much more important; a marriage proposal.
In front of the entire 3175th Military Police Company, Pollard bent down on one knee and asked Hampton to marry him. Through tears of joy, Hampton accepted Pollard’s proposal to the thunderous applause of the more than 150 Soldiers, some of whom shed a tear or two themselves.
Before the emotional moment, Pollard, 24, of St. Charles, Missouri expressed confidence that his proposal would receive an affirmative response.
“Kaitlin has been kind of bugging me saying, ‘When are we going to get engaged,’” Pollard joked. “But if she says 'no' at least it will make a good You Tube video.”
While Hampton, 21, also of St. Charles, had no clue Pollard would be proposing, plenty of other people were in on the surprise.
“I told her father last week that I would be proposing,” Pollard said. “I also told two Soldiers and they told everybody else so I’m sure the entire unit knew.”
Pollard and Hampton met five years ago through Hampton’s sister, who was dating Pollard’s best friend.
“I’ve known that Kaitlin was ‘the one’ for several years now,” Pollard revealed.
“On a scale of one to ten, this was a ten,” she said through tears. “I was very surprised because I didn’t think he was listening to my hints, but Zack is a wonderful man and he is going to make a wonderful father.”
Pollard has served in the Missouri National Guard for six years and Hampton is an assistant
manager of a hair salon. They both say they are very excited to start their lives together and plan on raising a family in St. Charles.
