(KMOV) – The heavy rains may have helped close Highway 109, a major north and south roadway in west St. Louis County.
The Missouri Department of Transportation blocked off the road in the area along the Rockwoods reservation area after part of the road collapsed.
MoDOT says it will take about a month to repair, and that means changing plans for some 20,000 drivers that use the connection between Manchester Road and I-44.
“The pavement is sitting on soil and rock, and the soil gets so saturated with water that it starts sliding and takes the road with it," says Ed Hassinger of MoDOT.
Drivers are warned not to be in a rush to get anywhere.
MoDOT is working to get a contractor who will tear down the damaged 400 foot section and then rebuild it to make sure it does not happen again.
The project will cost close to half a million dollars.
