EFFINGHAM, Ill. (AP) -- A St. Louis man accused of causing the death of a southern Illinois police officer during a chase has been ordered to spend four years in prison.
An Effingham County judge sentenced 31-year-old Andrew Davenport on Monday after Davenport pleaded guilty to reckless homicide, just as his trial was about to begin.
Authorities say 35-year-old Cowden officer Jeremy Hubbard was chasing Davenport's pickup truck last August, suspecting Davenport of driving off from a service station without paying for diesel fuel.
Hubbard lost control of his police cruiser, which flipped several times, killing him.
Davenport later surrendered to authorities in Maryland.
