SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri State University officials say they are investigating a possible security breach involving thousands of students at the Springfield school.

The university announced Thursday that it is notifying 6,030 students that their Social Security numbers might have been compromised. The students were enrolled in the College of Education between 2005 and 2009.

KY3-TV reports that the university says nine lists of students prepared in electronic formats were posted on an unsecured server, meaning all nine lists ended up on the Google.

College officials say they learned of the problem on Feb. 22. All nine lists have been removed from Google. The university says in a news release that a few of the numbers were compromised.

The university will pay for consumer identity theft protection insurance for all those involved.
