Police ID elderly man killed in Granite City apartment fire

(KMOV) -- An elderly man is dead after an apartment fire in Granite City.
It happened around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday at an apartment complex near the intersection of Pontoon and Sara.
Neighbors first noticed water running out of the man’s apartment and into the basement of the complex. They called maintenance workers who went to the man’s apartment and saw smoke stains on the door.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and found 67-year-old Robert H. Thomas face down on the floor by the back door called the fire department.
Thomas was given advanced care by paramedics at the scene and then transported by ambulance to the emergency room where he was subsequently pronounced dead by the emergency room physician.
Neighbors tell News 4 that Thomas lived alone and had been in the apartment complex for 2-3 years.
Thomas was the prior owner of both Thomas and Mercer Mortuaries in Granite City, IL.
Funeral arrangements are pending at this time.
Investigators say it appears careless smoking caused a fire.
